In a nutshell 100 & Change is sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation. It is a competition for a $100 million grant to fund a single proposal that will make measurable progress toward solving a significant world problem. Proposals focused on any critical issue are welcome.
Here’s an executive summary of our grant application.
The Statue of Liberty endures as a beacon of freedom to the world. Yet an excessive focus on our liberties without equal attention to our responsibilities has created many problems we face today: social, political, economic and environmental. Viktor E. Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and author, cautioned: “Freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness.” Liberty requires responsibility. For America to remain a beacon of hope, we must recommit to Responsibility as Liberty’s inseparable counterpart. The Responsibility Foundation will unite students, donors and public figures from across the political spectrum and around the world, to build a towering, unifying monument to last the ages, simultaneously engaging communities with programs that inspire responsibility. Dr. Frankl challenged a generation ago, “I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.” It’s time!
